Horatius Bonar March 21st, 2007

1) The best work on the doctrine of justification, or, how a man may be right with God, is Horatius Bonar’s The Everlasting Righteousness. We believe everyone should read this book and have made it available for download here. It will do much good for your soul!

2) An Old Minister’s Complaints is one of the unpublished manuscripts available on the CD. Not meant for public eyes, Bonar wrote it as one who lamented the coldness of the hearts around him. It may be downloaded here.

3) Horatius Bonar wrote a small treatise on worldliness entitled Herod’s Ballroom. The increasing worldliness of the church should be a great concern to us all and this little book may be downloaded here.

4) Pastor John T. Dyck was kind enough to compile a scripture index for the five volume set, Light & Truth: Bible Thoughts and Themes; Bonar’s devotional commentary. The index may be downloaded here.

Is the sermon “A Weak and Effeminate Christianity” on this site? I have a small quote but I would like to read the whole sermon. Thanks!

Dr. Schultz…..that quote is from God’s Way of Holiness by Bonar and not in a sermon. The full quote can be found on my other blog here: http://drbrooker.net/?p=367. Hope this helps!!!

Are the sermons in Bonar’s Family-Sermons really preached by Bonar or are they only written to read? Where can I find some information about it? I asked this question because I want to study Bonar’s sermons (for my masterdegree).

    Hi G.J.,

I’ve never read definitively whether they were preached or not. They do read as if they were written, or at least heavily edited after they were preached. I would suggest looking at the Free College in Edinburgh to see if they have any sermons by Bonar in their archive. Otherwise, I know of none in print.
